2016 Lit Fest Craft Sessions

I am feeling very fortunate to be teaching several craft sessions for Lit Fest at The Lighthouse Writers Workshop here in Denver this coming month.  I hope to see you there!

The Vital Domestic

Starts: 06/13/2016
Time(s): 2:00 to 4:30 PM

It is often said that stories and novels centered on a domestic crisis must work double-time to command the authority and significance of fiction that looks beyond the home. This workshop will help writers focused on the domestic to cultivate in their writing what they take for granted about the daily, personal life of the home: exceptionally high stakes, enormous consequences, painful and troubling lessons, and experiences that are almost always shocking, complicated, and deeply rewarding.

The Nimble Absurd

Starts: 06/14/2016
Time(s): 2:00 to 4:30 PM

There’s an awesome range of fiction in the school of the absurd. Together, we’ll explore published works and look at how even the most traditional fiction realists might benefit from drawing upon the wide-ranging lessons and techniques of the absurd.

The Long-Suffering Non-Flash Short Story

Starts: 06/16/2016
Time(s): 5:00 to 7:30 PM

In this workshop, we’ll look at stories that run between 2,000 and 3,500 words—that god-awful range of five to nine double-spaced pages that no one (allegedly) ever gets published—and the types of joys and complexities to be found in this long-suffering (and increasingly successful) short fiction form.
